Handling things the Cargotec way down under

Cargotec recently received a major order from a customer in Australia for 22 of its ESC 350W Kalmar straddle carriers, each capable of handling loads of up to 50 tonnes. The customer in question – Patrick Stevedores – is Australia's leading container handling operator.

Just over half of the order, 12 units, will be delivered to Patrick's East Swanson Dock in Melbourne and 10 to the company’s Port Botany Terminal in Sydney. Deliveries will begin in May this year and the order is due to be completed in December.

Cargotec's Australian team will provide maintenance support for the straddle carriers, with spare parts supplied direct from the regional parts warehouse in Melbourne.

This latest order continues a longstanding partnership between Cargotec and Patrick. Cargotec has supplied over 120 Kalmar straddle carriers to Patrick container terminals over the years and there are currently 108 units in operation at the company’s sites in Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne, handling approx. 3.5 million TEUs a year.

Systems based on Kalmar straddle carriers are ideal for medium-size terminals handling between 100,000 and 4,000,000 TEU a year. Kalmar’s 7+ generation models combine high performance and productivity with low maintenance and operating costs.

Industry-leading automation is available as part of the Kalmar offering and was selected by Patrick for its state-of-the-art Brisbane terminal, which uses 27 fully automated Kalmar EDRIVE straddle carriers. Photo courtesy of Cargotec.
Kalmar is one of Cargotec’s three main brands, the others being Hiab, a specialist in on-road load handling solutions, and MacGregor, which provides integrated cargo flow solutions for the shipping and offshore industries.
