Kempact RA wins iF Product Design Award

Kemppi’s Kempact RA family of welding units recently won the iF Product Design Award 2012 in the competition’s industrial product design category. The competition is one of the world’s oldest and best-known in the field, and the iF design award has been a hallmark of design excellence for decades.

This is not the first piece of Kemppi equipment to win an international award for its excellent usability and design either. The MinarcMig™ Adaptive 180 won the red dot design award back in 2006, for example, and the FitWeld™ welding machine and SuperSnake™ GT02S subfeeder received red dot honorary mentions in 2009.

The Kempact RA sets a new standard for compact MIG/MAG machines and includes a number of features to make welding more efficient, accurate, and productive.

In contrast to its predecessors, which are low and open at the side, the new design is high and can be opened at the front, for example. The control panel has also been placed at an ergonomically ideal height and features a streamlined user interface without the type of complicated menus that can slow down everyday use. The Kempact RA also includes an integrated gas cylinder transporter, eliminating the need for a separate trolley.

Control knobs have been designed so that welders can use them without having to take their gloves off, and the inside of the machine is illuminated to make it easy to load wire and change wire spools in low lighting. Small containers have also been placed next to the display for storing contact tips and other consumables.

A user survey was used during the design of the Kempact RA – with welders observed and interviewed in a variety of countries and operating environments – to help ensure that the unit is ideal for a range of different needs. Photograph courtesy of Kemppi.
