New levels of energy efficiency from BaseN

Finland’s Academica, a rapidly growing IT and telecom service provider, has become the first company in the world to offer its customers real-time energy management at its data centres, thanks to BaseN Platform technology.

Thanks to its use of district cooling and district heating, Academica has been able to achieve world-leading power usage effectiveness (PUE) – and thanks to BaseN technology can now offer its customers real-time energy management as well. Photo courtesy of BaseN.

Academica's BaseN Platform – which was initially implemented to manage the company's expanding transmission, IP core and access networks, and IT production and customer servers – now allows customers to gain direct savings from the energy-efficiency features of modern IT hardware and hourly energy pricing. This is expected to bring customers real cost savings, as they will only be billed for the energy that they actually consume.

Given the fact that close to 80% of a data centre’s site life-cycle costs are energy-related, energy efficiency is quickly becoming an important competitive factor in the IT service market.

Academica's Uspenski data centre, which maximises its efficiency by exchanging thermal energy with the local district heating and electricity utility, was the first in the company's seriously green facilities, and has been followed by its much larger Suvilahti data centre, serving French IT giant ATOS.

By using both district cooling and district heating, Academica’s data centres have been able to achieve a previously unheard level of power usage effectiveness (PUE), and the concept behind them was awarded the Green Enterprise IT Award by the Uptime Institute in May 2010 and Finland’s Tekes Green IT award in January 2011.
