Boosting the efficiency of global material flows

Hiab on-road load handling products are widely used for moving goods and materials on and off construction sites, in forests, industry, and waste handling and recycling projects. Hiab’s loader cranes, forestry and recycling cranes, demountables, tail lifts, and truck-mounted forklifts all offer industry-leading performance.

Kalmar cargo and load handling products – in the shape of its ship-to-shore cranes, yard cranes, shuttle and straddle carriers, reachstackers, and terminal tractors – enjoy an enviable reputation at ports, terminals, and distribution centres. Kalmar forklift trucks and log stackers are also highly reliable industrial workhorses.

And wherever customers want efficient, safe, and reliable marine cargo handling and offshore load handling solutions – in the form of cranes, hatch covers, RoRo and cargo lashing equipment, or solutions for subsea load handling, anchor handling, and towing and mooring operations – the best one is likely to come from MacGregor.

Reducing lifecycle costs

To ensure the uninterrupted operation of its customers’ equipment, Cargotec operates more than 600 sales and service locations worldwide and employs more than a quarter of its personnel in maintenance and service.

Given that its customers include a large number of industry leaders, Cargotec is committed to innovation and developing more environmentally friendly, energy-efficient, and safer solutions. Continuously upgrading existing products and solutions is very much part of the equation too.

The ultimate objective is to reduce equipment costs throughout a product’s service life, while improving eco-efficiency through improved construction and components, and developing alternative fuel solutions and automated systems to reduce emissions.

The latest ICT technology is used to help make products smarter and safer and enable devices to communicate better with drivers and the surrounding environment.

Germany’s largest container terminal is using Cargotec’s automation technology as the backbone of its massive modernisation project.

Innovation across all three businesses

User safety and productivity have been further enhanced in Hiab’s loader cranes.
Cargotec has been the first loader crane manufacturer to develop safety features complying with the EU’s new Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC) and the EN 12999:2009 loader crane standard. Since December 2009, the entire range of Hiab cranes and demountables has complied with these regulations.

User safety and productivity have been further enhanced by additional features developed in close cooperation with customers, including the Variable Stability Limit (VSL) system incorporated into Hiab loader cranes.

Thanks to an electronic system that automatically senses how far stabiliser legs are extended and whether they are firmly secured on the ground, this ensures an optimal balance between capacity and stability throughout the operating area. It also allows crane operators to make full use of their crane without compromising on safety, even if there is not enough space to extend one or both stabiliser legs fully.

Hamburg opts for Kalmar

Cargotec has also been the world’s first crane supplier to deliver highly customised control and automation systems for one of the most extensive and technically complex port modernisation projects under way anywhere: the upgrade of Germany’s largest container terminal, Container Terminal Burchardkai (CTB) in Hamburg. The project will see the terminal’s container storage area completely automated and its annual container handling capacity doubled to more than five million TEUs.

HHLA, the terminal’s operator, wanted to expand capacity, but did not have the land available to do so, as CTB is built on an island. Growing upwards was the only alternative. Kalmar automatic stacking cranes have made this possible, as they can lift containers five containers high above a container yard, while handling goods in rows of six containers wide.

Three separate cranes operate in one storage block, with the two smallest operating on the same set of rails. Because the third, outer crane has its own rails, it can pass the two inner ones. This three-crane concept results in greater flexibility and guarantees high-performance container handling at peak times.

The electric drive advantage

Cargotec has also been at the forefront of bringing electric drive technology – and the benefits of stepless precision control, low power consumption, and reliability that it offers – to shipboard cranes.

Through its MacGregor portfolio, Cargotec now offers electrically-driven RoRo cargo access equipment; variable frequency drive (VFD) electric cranes; and MacRack, a new drive system that combines drive and lift operations for side-rolling hatch covers. It has also introduced MacPiler, an innovative gantry crane that can hoist, carry, and stack two lift-away hatch cover panels at a time on weather decks and between decks.

Macgregor active heave-compensated (AHC) winches are also setting new standards for performance, noise levels, reliability, and power consumption for remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), deep-sea load handling, and dry bulk cargo handling.
